Domains or not domain - that is one question

There are distinct advantages in a domain name. The best advantage is that your domain can be relocated to any hosting service without changing any of your web pages.

For example, if your address is : http://www.anyISP.com/mydistrict/ then all of your web pages are likely to be "keyed" to the primary domain of "anyISP.com". If you locate or go to a domain name of your own at a later time, then some or all of your web pages might need changes in link addresses.

You can check to see if the name you want is available at InterNic but to register a domain name you will need a web hosting service lined up.

Maintaining your Place in Space: How Often?

Keeping site maintenance efficient takes pre-planning. Good design really helps keep maintenance tasks to a minimum. Sites that have a minimum of offsite links and a maximum of proprietary local material are fairly simple to maintain. Keep in mind it still takes time, just like putting out a newsletter or hosting an event.

 
 

Maintaining a web site takes a commitment from your District

Before you build your site, think about how often you will want to update it - and you will want to update it. Estimate the time and cost and incorporate this into your overall district long range and annual plans.

Determine if you will need to purchase additional software or train staff to do the web work or if you will contract it out. Maintaining a web site will take either time or money or both. The benefits greatly outweigh the costs, but there will be some cost.
