MAKING THE MOVE
Moving to a new area and a new job can be traumatic. Whenever my family contemplated a move, we would get a newspaper from the area to check out housing, food prices, hot topics of the locals, feed prices (we had livestock) and Internet access (important to my business).
We would also get a map, and a regional tour book to find out whether we actually wanted to live in the geographic area. If you hate the location - you don't want the position. Find these things out before you put in the job application.
SOURCES FOR MOVING ON
- Where to get Vital Records
- Missing some critical paperwork? Here is how to obtain Birth, Death, Marriage, and Divorce Certificates.
- NATIONAL PERSONNEL RECORDS CENTER
- CPR houses the Official Personnel Folders (OPF) and Employee Medical Folders (EMF) of separated Federal civilian employees. If you've worked for a federal agency then had a 'break in service', your records are likely to be kept here. Obtaining record copies could help you if you are applying for another federal job. Plan ahead because this takes some time.
- Home Fair
- Relocation information including a very nifty way to get an idea of the cost of living difference, moving and salary calculators and much more.
- Realtor.com
- Do a little house shopping before committing to a move. Make sure you can find affordable housing near your job.
- IRS
- Check out tax consequences before you move!
- ABYZ News Links
- It is primarily composed of newspapers but also includes many broadcast stations, internet services, magazines, and press agencies. Please note that ABYZ News Links does not contain actual news content but only links to other news sources.
- NewsLink
- Over 4000 USA and Canadian newspapers, online. You can find one in your new area and get a feel for what's happening there before you move.
- Crayon Net
- Create your own newspaper by drawing from a variety of online news sources. Great way to keep track of regional news.
- US Census
- Recent Census data is available with 2010 coming soon. This is handy to check population, age groups, income levels, and a variety of facts that might influence a move.
- Government Information Sharing Project
- The original web site has been closed, but this link leads the way to alternate information sources.
- Ag Census - older data
- The Census of Agriculture provides a complete picture of the agricultural sector in the U.S. Economy by county, state, or ZIP code. This can be very useful in planning a move or gathering data for a conservation field project.
- Ag Census 2011
- All data tables are downloadable. The Ag Census is supposed to be handled by USDA but for some reason the gov site for the Ag Census has vanished.
- Mapquest
- Local street maps will help you find your way to your now home or office!
- Google Maps
- Google Maps are dynamic, interactive maps. Many areas have satellite photos, too.
- TerraServer - USA
- Zoom right in on your desired location, plus see the surrounding areas, too.
